4 Years of War

Issue 12
Ukraine

When I first entered Ukraine in early March 2022, I never imagined this war would persist so long, nor that I would follow it for four years of my life. Few stories have stayed with me like this. I’ve made over 20 trips to the country. These are just some of the moments and scenes I remember and carry with me.

ISSUE 12

Polish Border, April 2022: Ben, an American lawyer, welcomed refugees in a pink bunny costume. He embraced a mother and her twins who had just crossed from Donetsk. It was such an odd visual, and I remember those days when the world was fully focused on this war.

Kyiv, April 2022: Sometimes I take a self-portrait to remember I was in these moments too. Here, I’m with NZZ journalist Daniel Böhm, in a volunteer space, before heading east.

Dnipro, May 2022: I was at a viewpoint where families often gather. The alarm rang, but she stayed put as the sun had already set. I waited with her, and after it ended, she quietly moved on.

Zaporizhzhia, April 2022: I met Marina then—her daughter translated. Now Marina speaks English fluently, and over the years, many of these stories I simply couldn’t have done without her.
